The Colorado Outward Bound School (COBS) is a non-profit adventure-based education organization that emphasizes personal growth through challenge and experience. For over 50 years, our wilderness courses have focused on inspiring responsibility, teamwork, confidence, compassion, and environmental and community stewardship.


The Program Director works under the supervision of the Director of Operations and HR, and holds responsibility for the delivery and support of all Colorado Outward Bound School programs from the Rocky Mountain Program (RMP); including safety standards, quality control, people management, human resources, staff learning and development, facilities and infrastructure, efficiency in delivery and cost management.

This is a senior-level management position, with supervisory and financial responsibilities. It is an office based position, with occasional field visits / driving as needed.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Leadership and Team Management
Be an exemplar of the Outward Bound philosophy, mission and core values in all dealings with staff, business associates, clients and the public.
Under the direction of the Director of Operations and HR, develop and implement a strategic plan for the RMP which aligns with the long-term vision of COBS.
Lead the RMP Program Leadership Team in executing the strategy for the RMP.
Develop and maintain a professional and positive team culture at the RMP.
Hire, manage and oversee the training and development of RMP department heads (APD’s of Course Delivery, Staffing; Logistics and Facilities).
Actively engage in succession planning; mentoring and developing the future leaders of the RMP and COBS.

Safety Management
Support the integration of the National Safety Standards into the RMP.
Ensure the continual improvement of safety management practices at the RMP.
Ensure COBS maintains a first-class emergency response system.
Participate in program emergency response system as required.
Ensure the safety of all RMP facilities, and ensure they are managed in compliance with COBS and OHSA regulations.

Program Management
Ensure RMP courses comply with OBUSA and COBS safety and risk management standards.
Ensure RMP courses comply with COBS Educational framework, and deliver high quality educational experiences for our students.

Staff Training and Development
Ensure all RMP staff are qualified and competent for the jobs they are assigned.
Ensure RMP staff training is implemented in alignment with the COBS training guidelines.

Business Administration
Collaborate with, and respond promptly to requests from the Finance and Sales and Admissions teams.
Under the direction of the Director of Operations and HR, build and manage the RMP expense budget, ensuring each department’s ongoing business viability.
Analyze and monitor RMP profit and loss budget reports and make adjustment as and when required for the generation of a surplus outcome at the end of each (financial) year.
Identify and implement operational efficiencies.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Microsoft Suite: Intermediate working knowledge of office, word and excel. Ability to build excel spreadsheets, sort, use functions.
Driving: Good driving record.
Strong leadership, organizational skills, and attention to detail. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Able to prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
Strong written and oral communication skills. This job requires a high level of communication skills.
Financial management experience, including developing budgets and overseeing spending.

Education and Work Experience

Minimum of 5 years of experience in the outdoor education field,
Management and financial/budgeting responsibilities.

Physical Requirements

Sitting at a desk or computer at least 80% of the time.
Must be able to lift 20+ lbs
Ability to undertake field visits in extreme environments.

Schedule/Compensation and Benefits

Full time, year-round salaried position.
COBS pays a significant amount towards health coverage and offers vision, dental and short-term / long-term disability.
401k with match available.
20 days of PTO per year, plus one additional day per year of service
Salary Range $43,000 - 53,000
