The Volunteer Program director is responsible for helping envision and implement volunteer activities for the Grand Canyon Trust with an emphasis on citizen science, stewardship, advocacy, and youth leadership initiatives that protect and restore the Colorado Plateau. The director will work as part of a dynamic team to identify opportunities for volunteers to connect with the plateau, inspire stewardship, and nurture community action. The position requires a mix of advocacy, communications, creative thinking, interpersonal, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
Duties and responsibilities
-Work with program staff to design and implement volunteer projects across the Colorado Plateau that help achieve program goals. Think creatively about volunteer projects that address pressing environmental and social justice issues on the Colorado Plateau.
--Recruit, coordinate, train, and lead volunteers in the field.
--Engage the public in science and stewardship-based projects.
--Build connections between people and places.
--Bring capacity to agencies and tribes.
-Think creatively about how to harness volunteer support for the organization beyond field projects. This includes volunteer jobs that support the administrative team, communications team, event support, and more.
-Pursue and develop new funding sources. Assist with fundraising efforts such as Arizona Gives Day, grant-writing, and cultivating relationships with volunteer donors.
-Implement risk management best practices for the Volunteer Program. Ensure Volunteer Program staff are prepared to manage risk while in the field.
-Work with program staff to develop opportunities for youth and volunteers to be powerful voices of social, political, and environmental change on the Colorado Plateau in a manner that is complimentary to organizational goals.
--Engage the public and call on volunteers to act by providing action opportunities, advocacy training, materials, and strategic campaigns.
--Explore ways that the volunteer program can effectively support the upcoming generation of conservation leaders through existing and new environmental advocacy initiatives based in science, art, and political action.
-Manage the Volunteer Program budget.
-Supervise and mentor the Research and Stewardship Volunteer coordinator, Youth Leadership Program director, and Uplift coordinator.
--Motivate and guide the Volunteer Program staff with leadership, accountability, respect, and dedication to program work.
--Foster a safe and positive work environment.
-Provide communications support and content for the Advocate magazine, board updates, reports to donors, volunteer newsletters, blog posts, website, and social media as needed.
-Be a knowledgeable, reliable, and trustworthy ambassador for the organization at events, conferences, tabling, and other public outreach opportunities.
-Genuinely incorporate youth, volunteer, and staff feedback to adapt and improve programs.
-Other duties as assigned.
-A minimum of 3-5 years of experience:
--Executing on-the-ground conservation or social justice projects with a diverse team.
--Demonstrating strong managerial skills and the ability to motivate and guide a diverse team with enthusiasm, leadership, accountability, and respect.
--Recruiting, coordinating, and leading groups in outdoors settings.
-Excellent organizational, planning, and follow-through skills.
-Clear written and verbal communication skills.
-Knowledge of strategic issues related to conservation, advocacy, and environmental justice.
-Ability to work cheerfully in the field in unfavorable conditions, for long hours, and sometimes during weekends.
-Willingness and ability to travel (including some nights and weekends).
-A belief in the power of young people to enact change and a commitment to authentically incorporate youth perspectives in the conservation and environmental movements.
-Experience working successfully with diverse groups of young people to accomplish shared goals through collaborative processes.
-A commitment to leading with humility when entering communities and working with diverse cultures.
-Wilderness First Responder certification or more advanced medical training.
-Knowledge and understanding of science and conservation research, and the ability to convey its importance to the public.
-Experience with scientific data collection.
-Experience in advocacy leadership, community organizing and/or movement building.
-Previous work and/or life experience based in Native communities on the Colorado Plateau.
